Kitchen Remodel

Well, my husband and I have been working on remodeling our kitchen for quite some time. (I call it our 5 month long '6 week project'). But, finally, with the exception of caulking some corners, we can call it done and show off the parts that I legitimately call 'art' (along with a few pics of my paint/wallpaper/border scheme that I love).

So, this is my slate/mosaic backsplash made from leftover pieces of slate we used on our kitchen floor, and lots of pieces of broken glass, pottery, broken jewelry and miscellaneous found objects that I've been using in my mixed-media monoprints and Christmas ornaments.  This is paired with my husband's custom copper countertop with a hand-rubbed acid wash patina that reminds me of some 1960's psychedelic tie dye. Isn't it beautiful? I'd love to do a whole house like this!

Work in Progress

This is a soft pastel painting in progress, that I'm working on.  It will be a graduation present for my favorite niece when it is finished.  The photograph I'm using as a reference is one that she took of a place near her home in Kansas City.  Unfortunately I'm rather late with it (she graduated last June!) because the other project I started last June was remodeling my kitchen, with my husband and I doing all the work on it.  Next week I'll post pictures of that completed project (providing we actually do complete in within the week!) and my labor of love, the kitchen backsplash mosaic I made from slate, broken glass & jewelry & miscellaneous found objects.  Perhaps then I'll be able to complete my niece's painting and get it to her by Christmas?  I want it to be a surprise, as late as it is, as she doesn't know which of the many photos she sent me that I'm doing it of.  Hope she's not looking at any of these postings!

Fountain Hills Stroll in the Glow

This weekend is "Stroll in the Glow" in the city of Fountain Hills, AZ and my gallery, The Fountain Hills Artists Gallery will be participating in the Christmas Market on Dec. 4th, 5th & 6th, where all the merchants on the Avenue of the Fountains stay open late with drinks and treats to kick off the Holiday Season. The Christmas Market at the Artists Gallery will include a whole selection of artworks, from many of the gallery artists, at 40% off, so you can afford to give the greatest gift of art this season!  Here are a few of my artworks that will be on sale…. Hope to see you there!

Christmas Ornaments

These are just some of the Christmas ornaments I've been creating, inspired by all the mixed-media, 'found object' mosaic work I've been doing lately.  Once again, I consider this 'repurposing' at it's best, using broken glass, china & jewelry, rusty pieces of metal, thumbtacks, bottle caps & baling wire.  I think they've got a bit more character than pre-manufactured glitter balls.  These go on display for sale at both of my galleries, On the Edge Gallery in Scottsdale and Fountain Hills Artists Gallery in Fountain Hills, the day after Thanksgiving.  Let the season begin….

Scottsdale’s 11th Annual Holiday ArtWalk at On the Edge Gallery

I will be one of three featured artists for the Holiday Artwalk on Thursday, December 10th from 6pm-9pm at On the Edge Gallery, 7050 E. 5th Avenue (5th Avenue & Marshall Way) in Downtown Scottsdale. I'll be exhibiting my new series of mixed-media monoprints as well as my new handmade 'found object' Christmas ornaments. (Photos of these new ornaments will be posted here soon! Be sure to check back!) I'll also have a selection of framed prints & originals at 1/2 off, priced perfectly for holiday gift giving! Hope to see you there!

Karen Stecker, The Goddess Collection

“I have explored and studied art since I was a little girl and consider creative expression an essential aspect of who I am,” states Karen.  “I learned sewing and woodworking at my father’s knee and have studied painting, ceramics, sculpture, and metal smithing in various forums.

The creation of the “Goddess” came to me over time and tapped on my shoulder until I paid attention, and gave her life. She reflects our need to make sense of ourselves and our universe beyond what we understand as sentient beings. The use of stones, fiber, metal, and wood allows me to take materials from earth’s creative force and create something transcendent. The ‘energy’ of each goddess is meant to reflect her special message to the world.”

Jane Nassano, Pastel and Mixed Media

“This is what I was born to do. From the time that I was eight years old, I knew that I would be an artist,” states Jane. “There just wasn't any doubt, no second choice, no question. To create art, in whatever form it may be, is part of my purpose in this life."

While recognized throughout the western United States for her vibrant pastel paintings, Jane is best known for her diversity. From large scale works to tiny miniatures, her realistic soft pastel florals, nudes, and landscapes captivate her viewers and collectors.  For a completely different twist from the controlled realism of her pastels, her new series of mixed-media monoprints are abstract and unexpected. Using bits and pieces of found objects, torn paper, and fabrics, they tell whimsical stories with color and texture.

Jane Nassano holds a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts from Arizona State University, with a specialization in Graphic Design. She has completed post graduate work at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.  For over twenty years, Jane has been a “working” Fine Artist. She’s won numerous awards for her work and has exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions throughout the country.

Lori Meyers, Glass, Steel, Stone

Throughout her life, Lori has always pursued art. In high school, she turned her bedroom into a stained glass studio. Every field Lori has worked in has involved art and design on one level or another. Today, she continues to work in both oils and glass.  Lori’s paintings — whether on glass or canvas — are a reflection of many influences such as her passion for travel, her love of color, her appreciation of the great outdoors with its diversity and changing beauty, and her interest in both current and past narratives on various cultures. Variety within the medium, combined with artistic freedom to always explore both new subjects and techniques, keeps the pursuit fresh and exciting. At the end of day, Lori feels incredibly fortunate to do what she loves.

On The Edge Gallery represents over forty Arizona artists -- from emerging artists to internationally recognized artists. On The Edge Gallery is located in the Downtown Scottsdale Arts District in an airy 2000 square foot gallery. The gallery displays a diverse array of original fine art and unique gift items. On The Edge artists work in the gallery every day and run all aspects of the business.

Looking Sharp, Miss & Mister

This couple is looking sharp - literally. "Looking Sharp, Miss" & "Looking Sharp, Mister" are mosaics using pieces of broken glass, broken ceramics, broken jewelry and any other things I might've found lying around in an alley near somebody's trash. They are mounted on rusty, antique metal tractor discs and are actually made to be wall hooks. Repurposing at it's best!

"Mister" just sold ($350) so I may have to make "Miss" another mate! These two were so much fun to do, they may have children in the future. :)

New Website!

Hi everyone!

I hope you're all doing well and finding time to create some happiness in your life.  As for me, I'm finally getting some help with my 'technology phobia'.  I've just had my website redesigned and I'm on Pinterest, Facebook and LinkedIn as well. Please connect with me there and tell your friends.  I've been busy in my studio creating some new work that I'm really excited about. So please check back often for upcoming events and new works of art!
