I usually shoot photographs for reference in all of my pastel work. (I can't do this kind of realism out of my head.) One of my favorite things to do is shoot my reference photos in black & white, especially for sand dunes and landscapes. That way I get to paint my images in the colors that I see, instead of being influenced by what color things actually are.
